Amazon.com Product Description Amazon.com Product Description If you need an affordable, versatile way to make lightning fast local network connections, the Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch is the answer. Get blistering speeds of up to 2000 Mbps with this wired switch, which allows heavy users of multimedia, graphics, video, and other bandwidth-hungry applications to share and transfer large files with ease. Plus, thanks to the technology built into the EG005W you can mix clients that support slower, 100 Mbps speeds with those that run at full gigabit speeds -- without any speed loss. Simply put, the EG005W is the perfect solution for your desktop gigabit and 10/100 networking needs.
The EG005W features LED lights that keep you updated on the status and performance of the switch. View larger. |
Five auto-sensing ports allow you to use crossover or regular ethernet cables interchangeably. View larger. | With workstations that support Gigabit Ethernet networking, you'll see amazing speed increases over 10/100 Mbps networks. Connect your clients to the full-duplex ports and see your data traffic efficiency improve several times over. Dedicated bandwidth of up to 2000 Mbps can be attained with the EG005W, making it perfect for graphics, multimedia, and other applications that have to move large files across the network quickly. A full array of LED indicators are provided on the front of the EG005W, giving you detailed information about the status and performance of the switch: - Power: The power LED lights up when the switch is powered on.
- Link/Act: The Link/Act LED blinks when data is being sent or received through the port. When the LED is off, there is no data being transferred through the port.
- Speed: The speed LED blinks when that port is transmitting at 1000 Mbps. If the LED is not lit, the port is transmitting at 10 or 100 Mbps.
- FDX: If the FDX (Full Duplex/Collision) LED is lit up continuously, the connection made through the corresponding port is running in full duplex mode. If the LED is blinking, the port is experiencing data collisions. Infrequent collisions are normal. If this LED is blinking often, there may be a problem with your connection.
Amazing versatility is built into the EG005W. Simply install this switch in place of your current workgroup hub or switch, and you can network your high-requirement workstations with Gigabit Ethernet speeds, while continuing to service other clients at their current speeds. Or build your network from the ground up, and choose the link speeds that are right for each of the users on your network. The EG005W is designed to integrate easily with your existing network and you can connect your existing 10/100 Ethernet network to your gigabit server backbone without any additional equipment. All ports on the EG005W are auto-negotiating, and they have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection. This means that you no longer have to fuss with which type of cables you're using, as crossover and regular networking cables are automatically detected. Other advanced features include address learning and aging, as well as 802.3x flow control. Plus, head-of-line blocking prevention keeps your high-speed clients from bogging down in lower-speed traffic. Has been working 24/7 for the last 6 months June 19, 2005 FERNANDO CASSIA (Buenos Aires, Argentina) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
I purchased the EG005W six months ago. Since I installed, it has been working 24/7 flawlessly, hooked to three PCs with gigabit ethernet (two systems with Intel's PRO 1000/MT PCI cards and one with a Realtek 8139 PCI card).
I obtain gigabit links to all three systems using regular Cat "5e" cables (believe me, if you don't need super long cables, cat5e is just good enough, no need for the more expensive cat6), and the speed is only limited to about 400mbps by the 33Mhz PCI BUS, not by the switch (to obtain the full bandwidth, you need a system with Gigabit built on the system board which bypasses the PCI bus bandwidth limitation). Still, 4x faster than 100mbit fast ethernet is a huge improvement.
VNC sessions from one system to the other over gigabit feels almost like a local session.
Very stable unit, can be stacked on top of other likewise Linksys units (mine sits on top of a BEFSR41 ethernet firewall/router). Cons? It's got an internal fan. So if you have a bunch of Linksys devices, you need to place the EG005W on top, to allow proper air flow.
The fan is not _very_ noisy, just noticeable. Like a notebook's fan during normal operation.

Since the beginning of wifi, i have been purchasing linksys products. Now with Cisco's involvement (high end routers, switches, gateways etc), things can only get better.
Out of the box... no adjustments needed.
just the way i like it.
the only minus is the fan incorporated in the chassis is a little loud. as loud as my hp laserjet 5000 when it's cranking.
Linksys Ethernet Switch works perfectly March 31, 2009 Ben Myers (Jupiter, Fl United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This unit was recommended to me by my favorite MAC guru and works perfectly. Looks good. It's plug and play. 0 hassle. I would buy it again. Be aware that it runs very warm to the touch. That's normal from what I hear and read.
Linksys EG005W June 29, 2008 David J. Semon (Woodbridge, VA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Linksys EG005W is an excellent Workgroup Switch. Just connect the devices/computers and plug it in. It works great. No hassle, no trouble.
(NOTE: The newer version is smaller than the one pictured.)
Works Fine! March 23, 2009 D. Fudge (NC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The unit works as advertised. However, one of the ports did not recognize one of the RJ-45 jacks I plugged in. When I switched that cable to another port it worked fine. The problem port did recognize one of the other RJ-45 jacks on a different cable so, so far so good. Customer service is from India (to be expected) but other than asking 20 non-essential questions before getting to the real issue...they were at least friendly. They were no help in explaining why the port discriminated between the jacks but were willing to exchange the unit if I wanted to ship it back. The unit has operated well for the past month.
